Care And Cure For Children
The intent of the Care & Cure Initiative is primarily to improve access to specialty care in pediatric epilepsy and to pursue research for cures for childhood epilepsies.

The intent is based on the fact that there are far too few pediatric epilepsy specialists in our region and there are still no cures for the epilepsies.

In order to help accomplish the first objective and improve access to specialty epilepsy care, the Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Los Angeles has made significant donations to partially support a pediatric epilepsy specialist at USC/Keck School of Medicine and to support the training and salary of a pediatric epilepsy specialist at the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine.

To help accomplish the second objective and support epilepsy research, the Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Los Angeles has donated funds to the Epilepsy Foundation National Office to support research in pediatric epilepsies.

More recently, as part of this effort, the Epilepsy Foundation is partnering with a small group of parents and a few epilepsy specialists to meet with medical students in the medical schools in California to encourage the students to consider pursuing neurology and particularly pediatric epileptology as a specialty. To begin with, the effort is called “Parents in Pursuit of Specialists".

Help4Heroes Initiative
Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is becoming commonly known as the “signature injury” of the Iraq and Afghanistan conflict. Brain injury, as the epilepsy community is aware, puts an individual at risk for epilepsy. While the symptoms of a mild case of TBI may dissipate in a matter of days or weeks, the rate at which more severe cases of TBI develop into post-traumatic epilepsy (TBE) is rapidly accelerating.

As one of its new initiatives in 2008, the Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Los Angeles is launching an initiative to partner with the Epilepsy Center at the West Los Angeles VA Medical Center to provide much needed information, resources and seminars for veterans with brain injury and epilepsy. Our Epilepsy Freedom Walk 2008 seems a most opportune time to launch this initiative as we remember our Freedom Walk “Heroes” and our American heroes.

The Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Los Angeles is an advocate of prevention, early intervention and proper treatment. It is our hope that through education, veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan conflict will be advocates for his or her own health/medical care and seek appropriate/proper treatment. The HELP4HEROES Program will educate returning veterans and active military personnel about the high risk of mild to severe TBI by providing Help, Healing & Hope packages, educational seminars and resources.
